Terbinafine Hydrochloride
Strength: 250 mg per tablet
Packaging: 14 tablets (typically 2 blisters of 7 tablets each)
- Onychomycosis: Fungal infections of fingernails and toenails. This is the most common indication for oral terbinafine.
- Tinea Pedis: Treatment of moderate to severe athlete’s foot that hasn’t responded to topical antifungal creams.
- Tinea Corporis & Cruris: Effective against ringworm and jock itch infections of the skin.
- Tinea Capitis: Fungal infections of the scalp, often requiring oral treatment for complete resolution.
- Liver Function Monitoring: Terbinafine is contraindicated in patients with chronic or active liver disease. Regular liver function tests are recommended during treatment due to the risk of hepatotoxicity.
- Complete the Full Course: It is essential to complete the entire prescribed course, even if symptoms improve earlier, to prevent recurrence of infection and development of resistance.
- Treatment Duration Varies:
- Fingernail fungus: Typically 6 weeks
- Toenail fungus: Typically 12 weeks
- Skin infections: Typically 2-6 weeks
- Drug Interactions: Terbinafine can interact with several medications, including certain antidepressants, beta-blockers, and cimetidine. Inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you’re taking.
- Taste & Smell Disturbances: Some patients may experience temporary loss of taste (ageusia) or altered taste sensation, which usually resolves after treatment ends.
- Mechanism: Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal that works by inhibiting squalene epoxidase, an enzyme crucial for fungal cell membrane synthesis. This leads to fungicidal (fungus-killing) activity.
- Standard Dosage: One 250 mg tablet daily, taken with or without food as directed by your healthcare provider.
- Prescription Required: This is a prescription-only medication that must be used under medical supervision. Do not share with others or use for conditions not diagnosed by a doctor.
