Lamifen is an antifungal medication designed to eliminate fungal infections at their source. Each tablet contains:
- Terbinafine Hydrochloride (125mg): An allylamine antifungal that works by inhibiting squalene epoxidase, an essential enzyme for fungal cell membrane synthesis, leading to the death of the fungal cell.
Lamifen 125mg is primarily prescribed for the treatment of various fungal infections, including:
- Onychomycosis: Fungal infections of the fingernails or toenails.
- Tinea Capitis: Fungal infections of the scalp.
- Dermatophyte Infections: Including ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), and jock itch (tinea cruris).
Dosage is strictly determined by a physician based on the type and severity of the infection:
- Typical Adult Dose: Often 125mg to 250mg once daily.
- Duration: Treatment varies significantly; typically 6 weeks for fingernail infections and 12 weeks for toenail infections.
- Administration: Tablets can be taken with or without food. It is recommended to take them at the same time each day for consistency.
Common Side Effects: Headache, diarrhea, rash, or temporary taste disturbances.
Critical Warnings:
- Liver Health: Terbinafine can rarely cause serious liver damage. Report persistent nausea, yellowing of skin/eyes (jaundice), or dark urine to your doctor immediately.
- Sun Sensitivity: This medication may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Wear protective clothing and sunscreen outdoors.
- Pregnancy: Oral therapy is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless deemed essential by a doctor.
