a long-acting bronchodilator used with an Aerolizer inhaler to manage symptoms of asthma and COPD. The 60-capsule pack size usually includes one device.
- Active Ingredient: The capsules contain formoterol fumarate dihydrate 12 micrograms (mcg) of dry powder for inhalation.
- Usage: Foradil is a maintenance medication, not a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. It is primarily used for the long-term treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and in asthma, it must be used as an additional therapy with a long-term asthma control medication, such as an inhaled corticosteroid.
- Dosage: The usual dosage is one capsule (12 mcg) inhaled every 12 hours (morning and evening). The total daily dose should not exceed 24 mcg.
- Administration: The capsule is placed into the accompanying Aerolizer inhaler device and the contents are inhaled as a fine powder. The capsules should never be swallowed whole by mouth.
- Storage: The capsules should always be stored in their original blister packaging and only removed immediately before use to protect them from moisture and light.
- Asthma Risk: Long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs) such as formoterol increase the risk of asthma-related death when used alone. It must be used with a long-term asthma control medicine (like an inhaled corticosteroid) for patients with asthma.
- Acute Symptoms: Foradil will not relieve an asthma attack or acute bronchospasm that has already started. A short-acting bronchodilator (rescue inhaler) is needed for immediate relief.
