- Preventing heart attacks in individuals at high risk or who have previously had one.
- Preventing strokes or transient ischemic attacks (mini-strokes) caused by blood clots.
- Managing symptoms of stable or unstable angina (chest pain due to heart conditions).
- Preventing blood clots after certain types of heart surgery, such as coronary bypass grafting or angioplasty.
- In some cases, to treat mild to moderate pain, fever, or inflammation (though low doses are typically for antiplatelet effects.
- Administration: The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and never crushed, broken, or chewed. It is often recommended to take it with food to further minimize stomach upset.
- Common Side Effects: Indigestion, nausea, vomiting, and an increased tendency for bleeding or bruising are possible side effects.
- Serious Warnings: Aspirin can increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal events, including bleeding and ulceration of the stomach or intestines. The risk of bleeding also increases if taken with other anticoagulants or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen.
