- Active Ingredient: Hydroquinone 4%.
- How it works: It works by inhibiting the enzyme (tyrosinase) responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. By reducing melanin production, it gradually lightens dark spots.
- Melasma: “Mask of pregnancy” or brown patches on the face.
- Chloasma: Darkening of the skin due to hormonal changes.
- Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: Dark spots left behind by acne or skin injuries.
- Senile Lentigines: Also known as “age spots” or “liver spots.”
- Frequency: Usually applied once daily at night, or as directed by a physician.
- Targeted Application: Apply only to the dark spots, not the entire face.
- Test Run: Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin for 24 hours to check for allergic reactions before starting full treatment.
- Sun Protection (Crucial): Hydroquinone makes skin extremely sensitive to the sun. You must wear a high-SPF sunscreen during the day, even if you only apply the cream at night. Sunlight can reverse the bleaching effect and darken the skin further.
- Duration: Do not use for more than 2 to 3 months at a time unless supervised by a dermatologist. Long-term use can lead to a permanent blue-black skin discoloration called ochronosis.
- Pregnancy/Nursing: Generally not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
