Key Uses
Menopausal symptoms: It helps alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, anxiety, and vaginal dryness.
Osteoporosis prevention: It is used to prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women at significant risk, for whom non-estrogen medications are not appropriate.
Hormone deficiency: It can be used to treat low estrogen levels caused by conditions like hypogonadism, castration, or primary ovarian failure.
Important Considerations and Risks
Hormone replacement therapy carries important warnings and should be discussed thoroughly with a healthcare provider.
Serious Risks: Estrogens, alone or with progestins, have been associated with increased risks of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism), stroke, heart attack, and certain cancers (breast, ovarian, and endometrial).
Progestin Requirement: If a woman still has her uterus, a progestin medication must be taken along with estradiol to lower the risk of uterine (endometrial) cancer.
Usage Guidance: The medication should be used at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals.
