DIASMECT is dioctahedral smectite (diosmectite), which is an intestinal adsorbent used primarily to treat diarrhea and related gastrointestinal discomfort. It is a natural aluminomagnesium silicate clay that is not readily absorbed into the body, making it generally well-tolerated.
Diasmect is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of various conditions:
- Acute diarrhea in children, infants, and adults, usually in addition to oral rehydration therapy.
- Chronic diarrhea in adults.
- Pain associated with functional bowel disorders in adults.
- Symptomatic relief of esophageal, gastric, or duodenal pain (indigestion/stomach upset). l
Mechanism of Action
The active ingredient, diosmectite, works in the gastrointestinal tract through several mechanisms:
- Adsorbent Properties: It binds to toxins, bacteria, viruses, and other irritants in the gut lumen, preventing them from causing damage.
- Mucosal Protection: It interacts with the mucus lining of the digestive system, strengthening the barrier and protecting the mucous membrane from damage.

Diasmect is available as a powder in sachets or as an oral
- Preparation: Sachets are typically dissolved in water, milk, or juice for children, or half a glass of water for adults. The suspension should be shaken well before use.
- Timing: It is often advised to take it between meals for general indications, or after meals if treating esophagitis.
- Important Precaution: Other medications should be administered at least 60-90 minutes before or after taking Diasmect to avoid affecting their absorption and efficacy.
