Bismuth Oxide (often formulated as Colloidal Bismuth Subcitrate) is a specialized gastro-protective agent. Unlike standard antacids, it is primarily used for:
Peptic Ulcer Disease: Heals ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.
H. pylori Eradication: Often used as part of “Triple Therapy” or “Quadruple Therapy” to kill Helicobacter pylori bacteria.
Chronic Gastritis: Treats long-term inflammation of the stomach lining.
Protective Coating: Forms a protective film over the ulcer/inflamed area, shielding it from stomach acid and pepsin.
Antibacterial Action: Directly inhibits the growth of H. pylori bacteria.
Healing Support: Stimulates the production of prostaglandins and mucus, enhancing the stomach’s natural defense layers.
Standard Dose: Usually 120mg taken four times daily (30 minutes before meals and before bed) OR 240mg twice daily.
Timing is Key: Must be taken on an empty stomach. Do not consume milk, food, or antacids 30 minutes before or after the dose, as they prevent the protective film from forming.
Duration: Typically taken for 4 to 8 weeks as prescribed by a doctor.
Stool Discoloration: It is very common and harmless for stools to turn black. This is not blood; it is the bismuth reacting with sulfur in the gut.
Tongue Darkening: Some patients may experience a temporary dark coating on the tongue.
Kidney Warning: Not recommended for patients with severe kidney impairment.
Limit Use: Long-term use is discouraged to avoid bismuth accumulation in the body.
